Dr Ja Intarasoot is an accredited Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry. She obtained her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) in 1994 and her Specialist Masters in Children’s Dentistry from the Eastman Dental Hospital London in 1998. Dr Ja was inducted as a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Singapore in 2006 and was in the pioneer batch of Dental Specialists accredited by the Singapore Dental Council in 2008.
Dr Ja manages Paediatric Dental patients from birth to early teens and advocates prevention and treatment of dental problems at an early stage. Aside from managing regular dental issues like tooth decay, root canal treatment and malocclusion, Dr Ja also regularly deals with childhood dental and facial development issues like thumb sucking, mouth breathing, teeth grinding, tongue and/or lip tied as well as latching issues. She has special interests in pre-orthodontic teeth-muscle-skeletal relationships and their interceptive therapies, speech development, airway dentistry and Paediatric Dental Traumatology.
Dr Ja is equally proficient in managing fearful and medically compromised children. She regularly works with her Dental and Medical Specialist colleagues in the total management of the child patient, both in the clinic as well as in an in-patient hospital setting. She is familiar with and has been exposed to a very wide spectrum of paediatric dental disorders right from the early stages of her career as she was the co-ordinating dentist in charge of over 20,000 children from all parts of Thailand in the 1990s where she was directly responsible for their dental care and for formulating dental policies and health programmes. Many of the kiddies had often presented with novel and complicated dental issues.
Dr Ja’s scope of management covers chairside Dental treatment through various acclimatization techniques, under Local Anaesthesia, through inhalational sedation (laughing gas) or under General Anaesthesia. She is able to fully empathise with the child and comfortably address all parental concerns after almost 3 decades of paediatric dental experience. Most of her patients are comfortably managed at the chairside in the clinical setting. Dr Ja has equal expertise in managing complex dental situations for the child patient under General Anaesthesia in the Hospital setting. As at the end of 2021, she has already successfully carried out and rehabilitated over 5000 cases of severe dental dysfunction under General Anaesthesia alone, where treatment cannot be carried out at the chairside with regular treatment techniques. Dr Ja has full accreditation and Hospital Operating rights in all the major Private Hospitals in Singapore.
Dr Ja also contributes to public education, having delivered hospital based talks and contributing noteworthy articles for the general public. She has served in the committee of the Chapter of Paediatric Dentistry in the College of Dental Surgeons of the Academy of Medicine, and was a Founding as well as a Council member of the Specialist Society of Paediatric Dentistry. She is also a member of the Singapore Dental Association, the Thai Society of Paediatric Dentistry and the Thai Dental Association.
On the non-dental front, Dr Ja is active in charity work and is an avid golfer, having participated in multiple local, regional and international golf competitions. She has a showcase that is slowly filling up with medals and trophies. She has been her Golf Club’s Ladies League Captain for the Annual Singapore Golf Association (SGA) League since 2017.
